"Chief High Bear" (Mato Wankataya)

Photographed ca. 1900. Chief High Bear was known to be a Lakota Sioux warrior. Little is known about his life, but after signing the Black Hills treaty in 1876, it appears that he settled down in Pine Ridge until his death in 1915.
